What the kaolin base actually does

Kaolin is a fine cosmetic clay that absorbs surface oil on the hair strand, which is what creates the low-shine, matte look without a greasy residue. In this formula kaolin is a cosmetic finishing agent — it does not treat, cleanse or detox the scalp.

Formulation note

This is an oil and wax-based clay (mineral oil, petrolatum, paraffin, beeswax). It is not water-soluble. Wash out thoroughly with shampoo.

Fragrance allergen notice

The formula contains multiple EU-listed fragrance allergens (Citral, Eugenol, Benzyl Salicylate, Linalool, Citronellol, Limonene, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Amyl Salicylate, Linalyl Acetate, Geranyl Acetate and essential oils). If you have a known fragrance sensitivity, perform a patch test on a small area of skin at least 24 hours before use and discontinue if irritation occurs.

How to use MONACORE Hair Clay

1. Blow-dry the hair first — the clay performs best on dry or nearly dry hair.
2. Scoop a small amount (start with less than you think you need).
3. Rub and emulsify between both palms until the clay warms and spreads evenly.
4. Work through the hair from underneath outward, distributing evenly before shaping.
5. Style with your fingers or a comb to the texture and direction you want.
6. Finish with a brief pass of the blow-dryer on low heat to set the shape and enhance texture.

The hold is pliable — you can re-work the style later in the day with your fingers. To remove, shampoo thoroughly; this formula is oil and wax-based and does not rinse out with water alone.

Is this a styling clay or a hair treatment?

It is a styling clay — a shaping and texturising product applied to dry hair before or during styling. It does not treat, nourish, repair or cleanse the hair or scalp. Kaolin in this formula is a cosmetic matte-finish agent, not a therapeutic ingredient.

What does the hold actually feel like?

Light-to-medium and pliable (3/10 on MONACORE's scale). The clay gives enough grip to separate and define strands and hold a textured shape, but the hair stays flexible — you can reshape it through the day with your fingers without it feeling crunchy or stiff.

Will it make my hair look shiny or greasy?

No. Shine is 2/10. The grey kaolin absorbs surface oil on the hair strand, which is what keeps the finish semi-matte and non-greasy. If your hair tends to look oily by midday, this finish suits that concern better than a pomade or gloss paste would.

Clay vs pomade — what's the difference?

A pomade typically delivers a medium-to-high shine and a smoother, more polished hold. A clay like this one uses a kaolin base to create a matte, textured finish with a lighter, re-workable hold. Choose clay for natural or undone styles; choose pomade for slicked-back or high-gloss looks.

Does it wash out easily?

No. The formula is oil and wax-based (mineral oil, petrolatum, beeswax, paraffin). It does not dissolve with water alone. Use a regular shampoo and work it through thoroughly to remove.

What does it smell like?

A warm citrus-woody scent: cedar (Juniperus Virginiana Oil), lemon peel, bitter orange peel, patchouli and a touch of vanilla. The scent ingredients are present for fragrance only — they are not active or nourishing components.

Is it safe for sensitive skin?

The formula contains a number of EU-listed fragrance allergens including Citral, Eugenol, Linalool, Limonene and several others. If you have fragrance sensitivity or reactive skin, apply a small amount to the inside of your wrist and wait 24 hours before using it on your hair. Stop use if you notice irritation.

With a clay this light, less product does more. Start with a pea-sized amount for short hair — you can always add, but overloading a low-hold clay just makes the hair sit flat without grip. Emulsify it properly between your palms until it almost disappears, then work it in fast. The finish is better when the clay hits the hair warm.
